Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue is an energetic parish in the Episcopal Diocese of New York of about 800 active members and a larger number of people associated through the webcast ministry, Choir School, and music programs. As one of the leading parishes in the Diocese, it is a significant contributor to the wider mission of the Episcopal Church in New York.
During the current health pandemic and period of challenging social upheaval, the Parish serves as a virtual oasis of prayer for the city of New York. The Parish has expanded its reach and commitment to providing a rich array of opportunities for worship, music programs, interaction with clergy, fellow parishioners, and community members through creative use of technology (video webcasts, Zoom gatherings, and more). The Pandemic has given the Church an opportunity to extend its global reach with thousands of on-line participants. Despite recent events, the new Chief Advancement Officer will arrive at an exciting time in the life of the Parish and its School.
The Parish and Choir School have a staff of nearly 100 full- and part-time employees. In addition to lay staff, several clergy lead particular aspects of parish life: communications and programming; pastoral care; children and families; and education and formation.
Saint Thomas Church Choir School continues the centuries-old tradition of singing in a boy choir. The School is one of only three of its kind in the world, and the only one in the United States. The School offers a wealth of extracurricular enrichment and a talented faculty in a warm and nurturing environment. The choristers join the Gentlemen of the Choir, who are professional singers, at services and in concert throughout the academic year.
FUNDING: Charitable outreach has always been an important priority for Saint Thomas Church and includes tens of thousands of dollars in grants to worthy programs throughout the world, contributions to victims of natural disasters, significant scholarship support for choristers who need it, and the Church’s weekly Soup Kitchen, and Prayers Shawl Ministry.
The Parish has an annual operating budget of $12 million; the endowment provides more than 70% of its annual revenue; parishioners and friends contribute approximately 15%. Saint Thomas Church needs to significantly increase funding from other sources to sustainably grow and fulfill its mission. The Parish anticipates launching a capital campaign for which a feasibility study has been completed.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will work with leadership and staff to raise significant philanthropy in uncertain times and to expand the base of support over time. In collaboration with the Rector and the Vestry, the CAO will plan and implement all fundraising and communications/marketing strategies for the Church, the School, the concert series, and the Planned Giving Guilds. Working with the management team in strategic direction and implementation, the CAO will build strong relationships with the School Alumni Association and its Governing Body.
