About the Obama Foundation
At the Obama Foundation, we are guided by a core belief: that ordinary people working together can change history. Our mission is to inspire those people to take action, empower them to change their world for the better, and connect them so they can achieve more together than they can alone.
That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center (OPC). The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation’s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity.
As we advance in our programmatic initiatives and move closer to the actualization of the OPC, we are investing heavily in fundraising and development talent that can serve as drivers of our mission-critical work. The key to success in these roles is a commitment to philanthropic excellence and leveraging our community at large to support our cause in transformational ways. As President Obama has said, “we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.”
A member of the Development Department’s senior management team, the VP of Development (VPD, Management Level - Director) will report directly to the Chief Development Officer and will work closely with the Vice President of Development Operations (VPO) to manage the Foundation’s fundraising and development activities. This person will assume the primary responsibility for establishing and managing the infrastructure needed to raise the funds to build and endow the OPC and its programs, as well as ensure the sustainability of the Foundation well into the future.
The VPD will be responsible for overseeing all revenue-generating activities – including regional major giving, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, and the Chicago Capital Campaign – with the goal of expanding and diversifying the Foundation’s donor base to meet its ambitious fundraising goal. This is an ideal opportunity for a proven nonprofit fundraising professional with capital campaign and leadership experience at a complex nonprofit organization or institution, but who’s seeking an opportunity to build infrastructure and teams during a time of rapid growth for the Foundation. The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, solution-oriented and motivated to work collaboratively in pursuit of big goals.
Serve as a partner to the CDO on the day-to-day management of the Campaign, which includes oversight of all frontline fundraising activities including:
Five regional major gifts teams focused on cultivating and soliciting gifts in the $10,000-$5 million range across the country and the globe
Corporate and Foundation Relations team focused on securing grants from institutional and corporate foundations and creating complex corporate partnerships
Establishment of a Planned Giving program focused on identifying, soliciting, and processing blended (cash plus deferred) gifts with a focus on endowment
Manage the Campaign Cabinet and Regional Councils comprised of high-profile individuals charged with opening doors to new prospects in their communities
Oversee the Chicago Capital Campaign and partner with other departments across the Foundation to plan and execute the “public” phase of the campaign
Partner with the VP of Operations to ensure portfolio management, fundraising activity, and dashboards are managed and pulled from Salesforce
Partner with the Donor Relations and Events team to create and implement strategies that serve the frontline fundraising teams’ donor cultivation and stewardship needs
Supervise, train, and coach team members, including up to five direct reports
Represent the Development Team in internal Foundation settings as deemed appropriate by the CDO
Education and Experience
A minimum of 10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, including at least five years in a leadership position, with expertise in the areas of major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving.
