The Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center as an immediate opening for a Development and Fundraising Coordinator to join the Visitor Center team to plan and direct efforts to strengthen our financial base and diversify our sources of revenue. This position will strategically seek out new partners and philanthropic investors, corporate sponsors, and elevate our profile throughout Arizona and beyond.

We are developing an exciting new astronomy outreach center within an iconic solar observatory—the towering McMath-Pierce solar observatory--which will be truly unique in the world and will have international reach. Being developed as a new integral component of the Visitor Center program, and with major support already received from the National Science Foundation (NSF), our Windows on the Universe Center for Astronomy Outreach will consist of one of the world’s largest solar observatories, several interactive exhibit galleries, and two astronomy theaters: Science On a Sphere (SOS) and a digital planetarium. The vision is that we will become a unique clearinghouse of astronomy images generated at other major NSF-funded observatories around the globe. Our team will create visuals capable of being displayed in any museum equipped with either SOS or the planetarium, well over 270 museums around the world.
The renovated areas within the McMath-Pierce will more than triple current Visitor Center space. This will enable the development of an impressive array of new public and school programs for Kitt Peak visitors. This new global perspective and storyline will make our program an international leader in astronomy outreach and informal science education, engaging audiences around the world. As an integral team member, you will have a leadership role in shaping the direction of our greatly expanded visitor program.
The Kitt Peak Visitor Center has been conducting daytime tours and astronomy programs since 1964. It began offering exciting nighttime stargazing programs in 1996 and has been expanding its menu of programs and increasing its capacity ever since. The primary office for this position is located at 950 N. Cherry Avenue in Tucson, Arizona. Some work will occur at Kitt Peak where the McMath-Pierce solar observatory and the Visitor Center are located, approximately 56 miles west of Tucson. Transportation and meals will be provided when at the observatory.

Demonstrated history of successfully leading a development/fund raising effort at a nonprofit organization and delivering results that substantially impacted the organization for the better.
Ability to work enthusiastically, cooperatively and patiently with all guests, volunteers and staff.
Strong, very well-developed public speaking skills.
Well-developed, persuasive writing skills, particularly as applied to sponsorship and grant proposals.
Up to date knowledge of IRS codes as they apply to philanthropic and charitable giving.
Although most shifts will occur Monday through Friday during normal office hours, you must have the ability to work a flexible schedule that could include some evenings and weekends, primarily in association with fundraising events and VIP tours.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to receive continual training, put training into practice, and accept ongoing constructive feedback.
Must have well-developed desktop computer skills.
Provide excellent customer satisfaction service to all current and potential supporters, guests, and volunteers. Project a professional image of the Visitor Center team.
Ability to remain calm and productive under pressure.
Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public, fellow employees, managers, and volunteers; and respond professionally to unusual or unexpected situations.
Organized, energetic, honest, and outgoing with strong work ethic.
Must enjoy working with diverse audiences.
Valid State driver’s license.
Ability to pass a background check, per AURA policy.
CPR and AED certification is required and will be provided by NOAO.
Satisfactory completion of any other required safety training.
Active or recent membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals or similar organizations.
Some knowledge in astronomy and familiarity with the night sky will be helpful to you as you work to strengthen the base of support for our programs.
Experience in designing fund raising materials.
Familiarity with the Tohono O’odham Nation.
