Cultivates solicits, and stewards existing donors while developing new donors and funding opportunities. Manages a prospect portfolio of 150-200 prospects. Provides leadership, supervision, and day-to-day management of an integrated development program in order to raise both unrestricted and restricted philanthropic gift commitments of $25,000+ for the University.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages a pool of approximately 150-200 individuals. This pool should represent a balance of individuals at various stages in the development of continuum. As a guideline, the following distribution is recommended (the mix might change based on the status of the campaign or project): Cultivation; Solicitation; Stewardship.
Makes or causes to be made 150 meaningful contacts per year. Based on experience, a full-time major gifts officer can make 200 face-to-face personal calls per year. However, other meaningful contacts may be included, such as joint visits with the VP of Advancement or President. Each meaningful contact MUST be reported through the prospect management system by filing a contact report.
Makes or causes to be made a minimum an appropriate number of major gift solicitations each year. This should produce 25-30 gifts at the major gifts level and a number of gifts at a lesser level.
Identifies 15-25 new prospects to be managed through the prospect management system that have the inclination and capability to qualify as major gift prospects. In general, 50 individual contacts will have to be made to identify and qualify 15-20 new prospects and these prospects will replace individuals who have been removed from the prospect pool.
Leads the planning and implementation of a strategic development plan for the assigned area of focus in collaboration with management.
Supervises colleagues who have gift planning, major gifts and annual giving solicitation responsibilities; develops gift planning and annual giving solicitation strategies, information, and other related data with the purpose of raising philanthropic dollars through various solicitation vehicles.
Organizes and addresses public gatherings; conducts meetings of volunteers and donors designed to identify prospective donors and advance prospects.
OTHER DUTIES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Ability to travel extensively in assigned geographic territory and to other off-site locations as requested.
Highly organized: able to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to independently organize and schedule appointments to assure that targets for number of personal visits and/or personal contacts are met each week.
Ability to use computer software programs with proficiency, specifically including but not limited to Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and relational database experience.
Required to work weekends and evenings for special events.
Overnight travel to meet alumni, donor prospects and volunteers required.
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in major gifts, planned giving, or senior level development work with preference for background in higher education or healthcare philanthropy.
Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills.Must be disciplined, detailed and result-oriented.
Licenses or Certifications
Valid driver's license and automobile insurance.
Manages department budget according to University policies and procedures.
Works with minimal supervision and uses independent judgment.
Experience in development at an academic institution with a strong emphasis in major gift and capital campaign achievements.
