Consults on the development of principal gift opportunities proposals and gift agreements/terms, ensuring that recognition and stewardship offerings are in line with school-wide best practices. Partners with principal gift officers, the Associate Director, Principal Gift Stewardship, and colleagues throughout campus to develop individualized communication and engagement plans for the School's most generous donors, strategically timing all reporting, recognition and engagement efforts. Develops relationships with key School administrators to stay abreast of the latest activities and developments across the school, which can lead to Donor Relations opportunities. Develops effective recognition and engagement efforts across External Relations, identifying opportunities to re-purpose or combine existing efforts and lead the creation of new recognition and engagement vehicles.
Oversees recognition activities for principal gift donors, board members, and other VIPs as assigned. Responsibilities include personalized event, publicity, and recognition strategies in-line with donor preferences and School norms. Lead physical and online recognition efforts, and serve on project management teams related to special events such as building dedications. Owns the messaging and programming for the annual MBA Fellowship Dinner. In partnership with the Dean's office, oversees the creation and development of a donor recognition master plan for the HBS campus. Ensures adherence to University recognition policies and best practices, makes recommendations for potential new named spaces on a 40 acre campus with 33 buildings.
Principal Gift Donor Relations Project Management & Strategy
Evaluates practices/processes, develops best practices and looks for innovative approaches
In partnership with the Associate Director, develops annual communication and engagement strategies and calendar for portfolio of the School's most generous donors and prospects (~100 individuals and families) in coordination with fundraising staff
Works in close partnership with Development and Donor Relations colleagues to align proposal, stewardship, engagement, and recognition efforts for the School's most generous donors
Consults with HBS and HU partners on external gift-related communications including press releases and donor profiles in School and University donor recognition communications
Partner with colleagues across External Relations and HBS, keeping key groups informed regarding the School's donor recognition philosophy and efforts, as well as conceptualizing and implementing any special naming or physical recognition on campus
Partners with PG officers on the management of building openings, other PG-specific special events for new gifts, anniversaries, and key milestones
Leads development and implementation of new cumulative donor recognition for top donors
Leads development and maintenance of high end donor society/group offerings, including the Global Leaders Circle, and highest level annual giving societies
Creates meaningful, personalized gifts/mementos and engagement offerings for the School's most generous donors
Stays abreast of industry trends via professional groups and Harvard-specific peer gatherings, benchmarks with colleagues across University and peer institutions
Supervises the Associate Director, Principal Gift Stewardship, providing guidance and strategic direction, aligning their activities and personal goals with departmental priorities and goals
• Leads annual Principal Gift Donor Relations planning sessions and development of individualized donor engagement, recognition and stewardship plans in partnership with Associate Director
Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor's Degree required and 10+ years of related experience in fundraising, stewardship, donor relations or a related field. Experience managing and developing staff is required.

Demonstrated experience building and planning a donor relations function, knowledge of stewardship and recognition principles.

Following the conclusion of the overwhelmingly successful HBS Campaign, this new leadership role within the Donor Relations team will help to manage and enhance an ever increasing scope of responsibility. The incumbent will have significant Donor Relations experience and comfort working with senior leaders and major/principal donors. The Director, Principal Gift Donor Relations is a key leader within the team, overseeing all aspects of donor engagement, stewardship and recognition for the School's top donors. Leads the development of an overall Donor Relations strategy for the School's principal gift donors, including program development and refinement, innovative strategy creation, and metrics for assessing progress towards goals. Personally manages recognition activities for principal gift donors, board members, and other VIPs as assigned in partnership with the Office of the Dean.
