Union College, a nationally recognized, distinguished liberal arts college with a long history of engineering and computer science, seeks a motivated and strategic professional to lead our development efforts. As part of its recent strategic planning efforts, the College has developed a new vision statement: “Developing every student to lead with wisdom, empathy, and courage, in ways large and small, now and across multiple tomorrows.” Union seeks a vice president who can inspire the team to tell the Union story to our alumni and friends to increase engagement and philanthropy. Founded in 1795, and located in Schenectady, New York, Union College is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the nation. As the first college to redefine the traditional liberal arts education with modern languages, science, and engineering early in its history, Union is committed to integrating the humanities and social sciences with science and engineering in new and exciting ways and providing immersive learning opportunities for students.
Reporting to President David R. Harris, the Vice President provides strategic direction and leadership to a staff of 40 working in departments such as alumni and parent engagement, annual giving, donor relations, gift planning, and major and principal giving. In the past decade, the Annual Fund has doubled and in recent years achieved $4 million in unrestricted gifts. In 2011, the College completed the You Are Union campaign surpassing our goal of $250 million, bringing the total to more than $258 million. In 2020, the College will launch the public phase of our next campaign to bolster resources for student scholarships and financial aid, faculty support, immersive experiences, campus facilities and other priorities. The College has an endowment of more than $427.6 million as of June 30, 2019 and over 20,000 alumni of record.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished individual with a track record of success as a senior advancement professional, preferably in a higher education institution. Key qualifications include: superb skills and demonstrated success in major gift cultivation and solicitation; significant experience managing staff and programs within a sophisticated college relations operation; experience developing and implementing effective strategies; demonstrated ability to build and lead diverse teams; excellent communication skills; proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment; and an ability to embrace the culture and values of Union College. The ideal candidate will also be able to articulate the mission and aspirations of Union College with passion and conviction. BS degree (MS preferred) with a minimum of five years advancement experience at the leadership level required.
