The Office of Special Initiatives is a new team that leads the fundraising strategy and efforts for a number of program initiatives starting with the Data Sciences Center (DSC), the Institute for Sustainable Energy (ISE) and extending to others for consideration. Other program related fundraising priorities will need to be identified and aligned with the University’s strategic priorities. This team works in close coordination/collaboration with DAR colleagues, the Deans, faculty, and colleagues in the Office of Development & Alumni Relations across disciplines, departments and schools.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Special Initiatives, the Development Associate (DA) is responsible for assisting the Senior Director and Associate Director in their fundraising efforts through prospect research in addition to providing some administrative support. The Development Associate will provide programmatic and logistical support for Advisory Boards and serves as the coordinator for local and regional events and other constituent outreach. The DA will be responsible for communications, reports, and basic research and data analysis as needed. The Development Associate must work cooperatively with a wide variety of colleagues and external constituents, including University leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, to help execute strategies and work toward overall departmental goals.
Essential Functions – with percentages
Report Writing, Research and Data Management: 50%
Serves as part of the team identifying and building the pipeline of prospects and tracking all constituent interactions. Identifies and provides preliminary prospect and philanthropy research to Director.
Using a broad spectrum of traditional and non-traditional sources to research, organize, and evaluate a prospect’s financial capacity, ability to give, willingness to give, charitable interests, and connection to the organization and strategic initiatives
Produces in-depth, well-written prospect briefings reports based on a combination of data from the donor database, available financial records, real estate ownership, and other markers of high-quality donors
Implements new research techniques as they arise, striving to design the ultimate prospect research methodology
Works with other development staff to improve the organization’s fundraising strategies
May provide general support to development staff and work on special projects when called for
Maintains prospect lists, runs reports and manages all aspects of constituent relationship system reporting and record maintenance in Blackbaud Enterprise system (BBEC), including entering plans, opportunities, and other information.
Assist in special research and benchmarking projects as needed, as requested by Director and VP for Development
Office Support & Communications: 25%
Provides day to day support for the Director, the Associate Director, and serves as office administrator and operations coordinator to ensure smooth and efficient office communication and protocols
Coordinates stewardship moves management and tracking for prospects and donors, including collaboration with the Director, Associate Director, leadership/principal gift officers, foundation/Office of Industry Engagement officers and the Office of Stewardship and Donor Relations.
Works with the development communications team (DevCom) to produce materials that support The Office of Special Initiatives (OSI) priorities, including collaterals, proposals, social media, and digital content.
Advisory Board and Event Management: 25%
Assists with all phases of planning and execution of events, including Advisory Board events and other key engagement opportunities. Includes preparing and disseminating meeting materials, arranging faculty/student speakers, working with outside vendors and managing logistics. Tasks include: booking space, catering, tracking registrations, running nametags, recruiting and staffing speakers, preparing collaterals (invites, speaker gifts, etc.), tracking event timelines, communicating with colleagues regarding events. Includes staffing events and post event follow up and tracking.
Ideal candidate will be a team player who can be self-motivated and thrive in fast paced environment, building and managing collaborative relationships up, down and across the division and the University. Must be extremely discreet, professional, entrepreneurial, and be a creative problem solver.
Must have advanced oral/written communications experience
Must have strong technical and computer skills, including expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and and/or ability to quickly master new technology/software; knowledge of donor database (Blackbaud) applications preferred.
Must have event coordination experience and superior customer service skills
Ability to work nights & weekends; ability to travel locally and regionally; ability to collaborate and multitask
Three to five years of relative work experience, preferably in a research university
A Bachelor’s degree is required
