Supervisor: Director of Development & Organizational Advancement

Green America, founded in 1982, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a socially just and environmentally sustainable society by harnessing economic power – the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace. Our key program areas include clean energy/climate action, regenerative agriculture, fair labor, responsible finance, and green living. We carry out our work in three strategic and overlapping hubs: 1) Consumer & Corporate Engagement Programs, 2) Green Business Network, and 3) Center for Sustainability Solutions.
The Development Team focuses on increasing revenues for Green America’s work from individual major donors ($1,000+), foundations, and green business supporters. Team members include the Director of Development & Organizational Advancement, Major Gifts Officer, Development Manager, and Foundations Manager. The Executive Co-Directors and President & CEO are extended team members, as they play a key role in fundraising.
We seek an experienced development professional to work closely with the Development and Programs team members to renew and increase funding from current foundations, write reports and proposals, set cultivation plans, coordinate meetings with foundation staff and trustees when possible, submit letters of inquiry and proposals to prospective foundations, and work to increase Green America’s overall support from foundations. The position will be based in Washington, DC at the Green America offices.
Manage Portfolio of Current Foundation Supporters
Manage, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of 20-25 active foundation and green business/foundation supporters (currently $350,000 -$450,000 in annual revenues, and poised for growth)
Write and produce all reports and renewal proposals for active foundations, with guidance from Programs team members and Director of Development
Coordinate personalized quarterly publication mailings and email updates to all active foundations
When possible, schedule visits (in person or online/phone) with foundation staff and/or trustees
Coordinate personalized grant acknowledgement and thank you letters
Keep each foundation apprised of Green America victories and accomplishments within their respective funding areas.
Develop/Maintain strong, positive relationships with active foundation supporters
Maintain record of all interactions and deadlines in Raisers Edge.
Attract New Foundation Supporters to Green America
Research and identify potential new foundation supporters (~70+ prospects identified and counting), with a goal of 2-4 new LOI/proposal submissions per month
Connect with program officers and foundation staff to discuss our “pitch,” and, where possible, develop strong relationships with foundation prospects
Write new letters of inquiry, proposals, and budgets, and coordinate review of these with development, executive, and programs team members
Identify ways to introduce Green America to foundation affinity groups (such as the Environmental Grantmakers Association)
Track all research, submissions, and interactions in RE/prospecting spreadsheet.

Qualified candidates should have the following skills and education:
Bachelor’s or advanced degree
3-5 years of experience and demonstrated success in foundation fundraising
Excellent writing skills and experience in producing successful grant proposals, grant reports, and letters of inquiry
Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to meet tight deadlines, identify areas of synergies across teams, and develop new fundraising strategies
Exemplary communications skills, interpersonal skills, and professionalism
Ability to build long-term relationships with key stakeholders
Foundation research skills and the ability to effectively identify, segment, and prioritize prospective supporters
Demonstrated ability to use technology and donor databases to manage fundraising efforts, and track actions and deadlines
Proven ability to effectively work in coordination with other team leaders
Strong intrinsic interest in issues directly related to Green America’s mission
Ability to obtain a deep understanding of Green America’s program areas and communicate this understanding to prospective funders
Ability and willingness to travel (at least 3-5 times per year) for conferences, events, and/or foundation meetings.
Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification a plus.
