The Director of Development will advance the mission of Bowling Green State University by securing private philanthropic support that aligns with the strategic plan and vision of the institution. This position requires a significant level of personal involvement and commitment to establishing and maintaining professional relationships with prospects and donors to the University, as well as with University leadership, deans/unit leaders, faculty, staff, and key stakeholders. With an emphasis on major gift closures, the Director of Development will implement discovery, engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for prospective and current University donors. Additionally, the Director will be expected to effectively manage activity to achieve the fundraising goals and priorities of a college/unit and meet defined performance metrics. This position requires a comprehensive knowledge of BGSU’s strategic plan and priorities, demonstrated leadership, high integrity and adaptability.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
Major Giving/Prospect Management
Determine and prioritize prospective donors, alumni, and other stakeholders to be contacted for personal visits to engage for philanthropic purposes.
Identify, assess, analyze, and design appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors. Connect the vitally important match between donors' philanthropic interests and the University’s priorities to secure philanthropic gifts for BGSU.
Actively manage and engage a prospect portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects, developing strategies to qualify, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward each prospect, as appropriate.
Plan and implement effective outreach and cultivation activities to enhance prospect discovery and move solicitation and stewardship processes forward. Prepare proposals and documents related to fundraising opportunities.
Brief internal colleagues and University board volunteers on engagement strategies that support participation in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts, as needed.
Conduct at least 120 prospect visits or significant interactions each fiscal year, including 30 discovery visits, and present a minimum of 15 major gift proposals/solicitations annually. Secure major gifts that cumulatively total at least $1,000,000, with a reach goal of $1,500,000 each fiscal year.
Analyze constituent data and maintain accurate, current contact reports and individual development and stewardship plans in the University's donor database.
Maintain strong professional relationships with donors and provide effective stewardship that demonstrates donor gift impact supporting the mission and vision of the University.
Work collaboratively with Assistant Vice President for Development and colleagues to develop fundraising and donor recognition strategies that achieve the University’s fundraising goals.
Develop and maintain professional relationships with University leadership, deans and unit leaders, faculty and staff to gain knowledge of the strategic plan, academic, research and programmatic initiatives in order to identify and define priorities for private support.
Use good judgment to determine appropriate use of resources for prioritized regional and national travel to meet with alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to build relationships that lead to philanthropic support of the University.
Serve as an active member of the University Advancement team, working closely and collaboratively with development, annual giving, alumni engagement, advancement services, donor relations and stewardship colleagues to successfully reach and exceed Division objectives.
Represent the University at designated functions, as required.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for University Advancement and Assistant Vice President for Development.
College/Unit Liaison/Special Projects
Manage strategy and activity for the prospects and fundraising priorities of the assigned college/unit.
Execute college/unit-specific donor strategy in an effort to secure gifts that advance approved priorities and initiatives.
Communicate to the Dean and AVP for Development through oral and written reports on the progress of fundraising priorities and pertinent donor information.
Coordinate travel and visits with the Dean/unit leader or appropriate college/unit representative to connect, engage, solicit and steward donors.
Advise the Dean/unit leader on attendance at important external and University activities, events and programs; be a highly informed advocate for the college on and off campus.
Serve as Advancement liaison to key alumni/donor boards or councils associated with the assigned college/unit that may include membership recruitment; annual and major gift solicitations; University Advancement, campaign, or BGSU updates; communication with current members regarding cultivation strategy and engagement.
Lead special projects identified by the Vice President for University Advancement and the Assistant Vice President for Development for both internal and external strategic initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to understand and articulate the University’s strategic plan and priorities.
Communicate to external constituents, including prospects and donors, the identified needs of the institution and demonstrate a meaningful case for support.
Understand sufficient best practices in securing gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills required.
Extensive knowledge of CASE Guidelines and industry best practices.
Capability of balancing multi-faceted or blended interest donors.
Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates.
Additionally, this position requires the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle including: discovery/identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, closure and stewardship.
Actively willing to contribute and collaborate with development team colleagues, as well as Division/University-wide colleagues.
Must be able to travel around the region and to other areas of the country, with 30-40% travel, including overnight and weekends.
Occasional evening, weekend and special event work required.
Bachelor's Degree required in any discipline from an accredited institution. Successful candidate must have degree conferred at the time of application. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and comply with the university's vehicle policy.
The following experience is required:
Three to five years of direct development and solicitation experience within higher education or a non-profit organization.
Proven experience in securing major gifts ($25,000).
Proven strategies of engaging/cultivating prospects and donors;
Liaison experience with a college/unit or comparable experience with internal/external stakeholders.
Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 358. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
