The Director of Development will designandexecuteastrategic developmentplaninsupportofSan Francisco Playhouse’smission and willboostthe long-termhealthoftheorganizationbybuildingmeaningfulandproductiverelationshipswithfunders.
The Director of Developmentwillreport to the Artistic Director and workcloselywiththeProducing Director, BoardofTrustees,the Development Team, MarketingDirector,andtheManagementTeamtosteward,solicit,andsecurecontributionsfromexisting and new sources.The Director of Development will:
Oversee all fundraising strategies related to cultivating, soliciting, retaining and upgrading donors through comprehensive fundraising programs including major and planned gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundation and public sector grants, events, and annual outreach
Initiate, lead and provide guidance to staff for fundraising activities that include tele-fundraising, direct mail, social media appeals, special events, and managing a portfolio of key donors
Manage all aspects of corporate, foundation and government fundraising
Research, prospect, solicit and create sponsorship packages and opportunities
Create development plans that broaden the donor base, maximize donor investment at all gift levels and maintain reasonable costs for excellent returns
Plan and institute enhancements to a planned giving program
Collaborate with the Producing and Artistic Directors to determine overall fundraising goals for the year and develop an appropriate expense budget to achieve the goals
Oversee accurate, reliable and timely donor information management including gift processing and acknowledgement, donor prospecting and research, and active management and tracking of donor records
Prepare fundraising reports for the Board of Directors
Facilitate the Board’s participation in cultivating, soliciting and acknowledging donors and serve as the lead staff person to relevant board committees/work teams
Mentor and supervise the performance and professional development of Development Team members by providing direct feedback, developing annual performance goals, coaching, mentoring, and sponsoring as appropriate
Represent the organization at events (major donor functions, receptions, community events, etc.).
Create an outreach program with local businesses and corporations.
3-5 years of hands-on fundraising experience with progressive responsibilities and proven results increasing gift revenue, preferably in the arts
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, establish objectives and priorities, implement plans and achieve goals within a fast-paced non-profit environment
Experience in developing relationships with local, regional and national institutional funders
Extensive grants management experience
Knowledge of planned giving
Experience inspiring and managing a team
Strong understanding of budgets
Ability to motivate, create and sustain productive working relationships with diverse populations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Extensive experience and facility with Microsoft Office, and donor management software
Availability for evening and weekend events
About San Francisco Playhouse
San Francisco Playhouse is a professional mid-sized theatre, budget, $4 million, presenting a 6-play mainstage series for 2700 subscribers and a 3-play Sandbox Series for 7000 subscribers. Our development department currently has three employees and raised $1.5 million per year. We also have a new works program that commissions plays, and presents readings and workshops. Our Rising Stars Education Program invites 600 high school students to 4-shows a year and provides in class study, talkbacks with actor and director and the student write letters to their subscriber sponsors.
