The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. LDF seeks a collaborative, motivated and experienced individual to serve as Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving to help drive the Development Department.
The Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving will play a key role on LDF’s individual giving team and will help advance LDF’s strategic campaign and fundraising priorities, with a focus on the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and planned gifts from donors and prospects with a capacity to give $25,000+. The Director will carry a portfolio of approximately 150-175 donors and prospects.
The successful candidate will be an experienced nonprofit fundraising professional with a track record of building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with individual donors. This is an exciting opportunity for a leader that is prepared to excel in a fast-paced environment.
Conduct a minimum of 100 personal visits annually to cultivate, solicit and close major and planned gifts;
Grow and manage a portfolio of 150-175 donors and prospects with the capacity to give $25,000+;
Develop individual donor strategies to secure, renew and increase large gifts;
Develop personalized correspondence including letters, invitations, briefings, and other mailings;
Manage prospect identification, research and assignment to ensure a continuous pipeline of individuals with leadership giving capacity and inclination;
Work with appropriate Development staff to identify and qualify prospects and build appropriate strategies to capture giving potential;
Develop stewardship strategies and opportunities for top donors;
Manage the prospect pipeline and ensure timely activity and progress toward fundraising goals and benchmarks;
Work with the Senior Director of Major Gifts to develop and implement a planned giving strategy;
Lead strategic efforts for planned giving pipeline movement, gift proposals, policy development and goal setting;
Manage the planned giving solicitation process and planned giving pipeline for the Chief Development Officer and Senior Director of Major Gifts;
Craft marketing materials describing planned giving vehicles and naming opportunities;
Assist in strategizing and implementing events and meetings for integrative engagement with top major gift and planned giving donors and prospects;
Manage acknowledgment of major donors and planned gifts as well as arrangements for recognition, as appropriate; and
Other responsibilities as assigned.

5-7 years of experience in development, preferably major gift fundraising and planned giving;
Highly organized individual with strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage deadlines;
Strong communication skills, both written and oral;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Experience working with high level donors and senior management;
Flexibility and ability to work independently and as a team player with a range of constituents and colleagues;
Understanding of current laws regarding taxability of donations, familiarity with deferred giving strategies, and knowledge of a diverse array of financial instruments;
Experience with fundraising databases; familiarity with Raiser’s Edge a plus;
Commitment to the mission and growth of LDF;
Experience with civil rights, human rights organizations a plus; and
Excellent computer skills and advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) programs.
