This position works closely with colleagues across the University to build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major-gift level donors ($25K+) to move them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals of the University.
The Advancement Division of the University of Mary Washington garners philanthropic support from alumni, parents, friends, foundations and other organizations to advance the priorities of the University. It is responsible for developing strategic initiatives and tactical plans that support the vision created by the Board of Visitors, President, and senior leadership of the University. Gift revenue will be pursued in a manner consistent with UMW’s culture, values, policies, and priorities.
Develop and implement relationship management strategies to ensure movement of prospects and donors through the major giving cycle. Responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects.
Conduct individual visits with assigned prospects, donors, and volunteers as outlined in annual metrics, traveling domestically as necessary. Arrange travel and manage travel expenses in line with an approved budget.
Direct research requests and provide information on University alumni, parents, and friends to qualify interest and giving potential.
Work with administration, faculty, and volunteers as appropriate to engage donors and prospects around key interests.
Prepare proposals, stewardship plans, and other correspondence for prospects, collaborating as necessary with Donor Relations and other key staff as appropriate.
Complete all necessary data entry for the position including contact reports and research into the database. Entries must be completed according to the prescribed schedule. All required gift paperwork should be completed in a timely manner and coordinated with the appropriate staff position.
Demonstrated knowledge and record of success with respect to major gift fundraising in higher education or a similar field.
Ability to analyze and prioritize prospect potential and solicitation readiness.
Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging practices and techniques of fundraising.
Organized, and enthusiastic about working with and inspiring the confidence of multiple constituencies, including volunteers, top-level donors, and prospects.
Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of audiences. Knowledge of basic computer skills and programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to manage multiple and complex projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities and needs.
Work well under pressure.
Ability to interact successfully and communicate well with external and internal constituencies of varied demographics, backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities.
Excellent time management and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Enjoy working with people, especially high-profile donors.
Strategic and goal-oriented, knowledgeable about capital campaigns, structuring and documenting of major gifts.
Ability to function as part of a team as well as be highly self-directed.
