The Executive Director of Annual Giving is a part of the senior leadership team, charged with guiding and overseeing the annual giving program, including appeals (direct mail, digital, and phone) for alumni, donors, and friends of the university. The Executive Director manages a team of staff members to pursue creative and comprehensive strategies for increasing annual support, with significant experience not only in annual gift fundraising but also in management, and with an ambitious vision for the future of annual giving at Point Loma Nazarene University. Working side by side with the Director of Alumni Relations, the Executive Director of Annual Giving is responsible for building a strong case for annual support for unrestricted funds.
Annual Giving responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Merge best practices from a successful annual giving career with a commitment to data-driven innovation in the field, helping to set the standard for higher education fundraising
Create annual giving marketing plans, appeals, digital/social media strategies, and donor recognition activities and events that reinforce university-wide philanthropy messaging and priorities
Participate in leadership-level discussions and decision making about the role of annual giving in advancing PLNU’s philanthropic objectives and expanding the university’s donor base and pipeline
Guide the integration of robust, leading-edge analytics and donor research into every aspect of the annual giving operation, from marketing plans and specific appeals to goal-setting and assessment
Develop customized solutions for partner units that reflect the needs of the university while making efficient use of resources and personnel
Recruit, supervise, train, and mentor a team of annual giving professionals with a broad range of responsibilities and skills
Integrate the insights and expertise of volunteer leaders in building and refining PLNU’s annual giving structure, business plan, and approach
Personally manage a portfolio of partner units, and plan and execute appeal strategies leading to significant increases in annual support
Create a coordinated plan for the parallel fundraising that takes place across campus, working with faculty members and campus leaders
Create and implement a comprehensive multi-year annual giving strategic plan (including objectives, goals, timelines, and evaluation plans) to solicit gifts from alumni, trustees, parents, friends, students, faculty, and staff through personal solicitations, phone-a-thon, online, a ‘day of giving’ campaign, and direct mail programs. This plan takes into account the need to engage new donors, upgrade existing donors, inspire alumni participation and grow the annual fund.
Provide oversight and strategic direction to annual giving programs, including but not limited to the Parent Connection, President’s Horizon Circle, Bresee Society, Senior Giving and Student Philanthropy, Stewardship and Loyalty Programs. Oversees development of collateral pieces and event planning for all programs.
Responsible for developing and facilitating all annual fund communication including letters, print pieces, emails, social media, videos, and web content, in collaboration with Marketing and Creative Services.
Oversees and optimizes the effectiveness of the students-staffed phone-a-thon and works with UA staff to develop initial strategy. Monitors results regularly, seeks best practices, and makes recommendations for program improvements.
Oversees the direct mail operations, working with internal services and external mail houses.
Works closely with the Vice President for University Advancement and the Executive Director of Philanthropy Research and Strategy to coordinate annual giving work with the fundraising efforts of the Directors of Philanthropy and the contact of potential donors.
Develops and implements a plan of reporting annual fund progress on a monthly basis.
Plans and manages the process for acquisition, renewal and upgrade of all donors at or below $2,500 annually.
Ensures the strategic use of Raiser’s Edge (donor management system) to generate lists and segmentations for appeals. Tracks costs and responses to appeals.
Performs comprehensive analysis related to all aspects of the annual giving program. Uses statistics to evaluate current annual giving programs and to make recommendations for program outcomes and goal attainment.
Oversees the acknowledgment, stewardship, and recognition of all annual giving donors.
Represents annual fund issues and promotes community awareness and support for the annual fund program.
Leads and develops the annual giving team to ensure they have the support, strategic direction, skills and knowledge to meet PLNU goals and objectives.
Works as part of an integrated management team to establish overall goals and strategies for increasing private support to the university.
Development responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Personally identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards potential/existing annual fund and parent donors.
Makes a predetermined number of contacts with annual giving donors and achieves a specific dollar goal.
Upgrades donors in an effort to move the donor relationship along the lifetime giving cycle and transfer relationships to the Directors of Philanthropy.
This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree or higher plus nine years of work-related experience. The successful candidate will also have:
A track record of success in increasing annual gift support through innovative appeals and targeted strategies
Experience in leading goal-oriented teams, managing budgets, and collaborating successfully with a broad range of colleagues
An ability to represent the Office of University Advancement both within Point Loma Nazarene University and in larger professional contexts, including national conferences and organizations
Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, with a particular sensitivity to the needs and interests of varied constituencies
A passion for higher education and an understanding of complex institutions
An appreciation for and understanding of diverse audiences and communities
Strong communication skills, the ability to shepherd a targeted effort within a complex department, and the operational skills that ensure tactical project management.
Strong analytical skills are required along with excellent writing skills.
A results-oriented individual, who demonstrates the ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, warmly develops relationships with diverse constituencies, and simultaneously employs keen judgment.
Understanding of and commitment to the spiritual mission of the university.
An understanding of Christian higher education combined with the ability to articulate the mission and vision of Point Loma and value of its education within the broader higher education context.
Knowledge of Windows and MS Office (Word and Excel) required.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
Experience in higher education preferred.
Exposure to business administration (e.g. planning, forecasting, and analysis), quality assurance and performance metrics preferred.
