Michigan State University Director of Development Associates and Student Internship Programs; Major Gift Officer
Michigan State University Advancement seeks a seasoned, independent-working, team-oriented and motivated advancement professional to support the talent and training programs: Development Associates Program and the Advance-U Internship Program.
This position will dedicate its primary responsibilities to build out, plan, oversee, coordinate and implement two important talent management programs for entry-level fundraisers and the student internship program at the University.
Both programs will expose individuals in the fundraising experiences and activities that will provide wide-ranging overview of development at Michigan State University. The development associates and student interns will have a practical experience in all aspects of fundraising including, but not limited to:
Identification of potential donors
Strategic cultivation and solicitation practices
Annual/major/planned gift donor activity
Recruiting and organizing volunteers
MSU policies, expectations and development resources/tools
The Development Associates Program has served as a talent pipeline of entry-level fundraisers with a body of knowledge and a learning foundation for their development career. The goal of the Development Associates Program has led to position placement in the various colleges, units and departments across campus. This program is a year-long program engaging the associate in all aspects of the development continuum.
The Advance-U Internship Program introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the field of university advancement by engaging in practical experiences on campus. Students are matched with a host within University Advancement that meet their personal learning goals. This program is a summertime internship program.
In addition, the Director of the Development Associates and Student Internship Program will serve as a regional major gifts officer in the state of Michigan. This individual will continue to hold a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors and will be responsible for discovering new prospects to build the institutional pipeline and securing major donor commitments on behalf of Michigan State University. In this role, the Director will leverage his/her major gift responsibilities to provide learning opportunities for development associates and student internship program. This may consist of including development associates on prospecting/discovery, donor visits, strategic prospect team meetings, gift documentation, proposal development or event planning. Required: Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing and/or Business; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public relations, volunteer administration, professional and higher education fund raising, marketing or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Travel is required. Required to have a valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of position.
Desired Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in any rigorous academic field. Advanced degrees and professional fundraising certification desirable.; experience in developing and implementing experiential learning programs; five or more years of experience in professional fundraising, public relations, marketing or related field. Experience in higher education, health care or a similarly complex, decentralized environment strongly preferred; substantial experience in hiring, coaching, supervising and mentoring professional development staff in a collaborative, but demanding environment is essential; a strong working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving, donor psychology, and the operation of universities or other major non-profit organizations; excellent communication skills are a must, including individual and large group presentations and strong writing skills.
