FULL-TIME JOB VACANCY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, US INITIATIVES Development and Outreach Department (New York / Other locations will be considered) Application Deadline: Open Until Filled The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a highly-qualified applicant for the position of Associate Director to develop relationships with donors and prospects and represent the work of Human Rights Watch within the United States. The position reports to the Director, Americas Initiatives, based in New York. The position is preferably based in New York, but other locations will be considered. Responsibilities: 1. Build financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from donors in the United States; 2. Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new and existing major gift prospects and donors; 3. Oversee the production of strategic fundraising and cultivation events and represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; 4. Service and grow the International Board of Directors, with a focus on Board members located in Associate Director’s purview; 5. Identify and qualify major gift prospects by working closely with Development & Outreach department staff; 6. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach Department; 7. Monitor progress against milestones and deadlines of all outputs that are within the purview of responsibility; 8. Ensure organization-wide coordination and complementarity as well as maintain good working relationships with external partners; 9. Create and track donor lists, fundraising, and expenses; 10. Travel as needed to attending meetings, trainings, etc.; and 11. Perform other tasks as required. Managerial Responsibilities: 1. Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately; 2. Operate in compliance with organizational regulations and rules, including the policies of applicable employee agreements; 3. Establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively; Provide oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignments; 4. Ensure that the workload of the staff is manageable and the reporting lines are clear; 5. Manage and guide staff by listening, having two-way communication, sharing pertinent information, responding appropriately and delegating appropriate responsibilities; 6. Provide appropriate and timely feedback on staff performance and provide guidance, coaching and training, as necessary; Provide guidance and coaching to staff in the supervisory positions; 7. Ensure timely recruitment of vacant positions; and 8. Foresee risks and allow for contingencies when planning; Monitor and adjust plans and actions, as necessary. Qualifications: Education: A bachelor’s degree in business, management, international affairs, philanthropy or a related field is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable. Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising experience is required. Required Skills and Knowledge: 1. Track record of fundraising experience with proven success in creating and managing fundraising programs in the United States is required. 2. Experience managing high-level relationships is required. 3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. 4. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials, and external media partners are required. 5. Experience working within international contexts is required. 6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is required. 7. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably Raiser’s Edge) and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
