The San Luis Obispo Symphony is able to provide its many education programs and concerts only with the help of many donors whose commitments and values are as diverse and dynamic as they are. To ensure strong and thorough fundraising efforts that sustain the organization by meeting fundraising goals, the San Luis Obispo Symphony is seeking a Development Manager. The Symphony has ambitious fundraising goals for the coming year, and is restructuring board and committee activity to accomplish them. The position will provide encouragement, support and coordination for the Executive Director’s and Board members’ involvement in fundraising. This includes scheduling, research, compiling or recreating materials as needed to build individual and business donors. This position will take part in, project manage and in some cases oversee, fundraising action consistent with the Symphony’s needs and goals, including many types of annual giving, sponsorship giving, major giving, campaign and planned giving, as well as fundraising events. The position will strive for consistent continued stewardship for every type of donor by creating and managing processes that keep the Executive Director’s, Music Director’s, and Board member’s relationship with donors strong and by ensuring agreed upon recognition and benefits are received. The position may contribute to or project manage grants as appropriate. He or she will use the new database to construct and maintain systems that maximize fundraising effectiveness including donor and prospect tracking, reporting, and budgeting. The San Luis Obispo Symphony has an annual operating budget of about $1.2 million, and fundraising contributes about half of the organization's revenue. The Development Director must maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. The position reports to the Executive Director.
A Bachelor Degree and/or at least three years development experience is required. Demonstrated ability in the successful organization and implementation of a variety of development initiatives (e.g. annual fund; major gifts; corporate gifts/sponsorships; events). Ability to work effectively and meet deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required and a fundraising database.
Successful candidates will be diplomatic, discreet, organized, creative, results oriented, excellent communicators, able to inspire donor trust and confidence, and can engage Board members and volunteers in the development process. A strong belief in the value of the orchestra to the community and enjoys classical music. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to think both strategically and tactically, and have a strong attention to detail. Demonstrate a willingness to be a team player in a highly collaborative environment.
