Location: Primary Office in Norristown or Pittsburgh, PA with Statewide Travel
Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) seeks an enthusiastic and experienced leader to serve as Chief Development Officer (CDO). This position will serve as a member of SOPA’s Senior Leadership Team and will be responsible for building and leading the development team responsible for all statewide fundraising with specific emphasis on corporate giving, foundations and individual donors. Working with the CEO, Board, and Regional Campaign Committees, the CDO will be responsible for successfully executing SOPA’s 3-year, $4MM “Inclusion Revolution” campaign.
In addition to managing the development team, the CDO will be expected to strategically build comprehensive, multi-year partnerships with corporations and other large organizations (foundations, government entities) statewide. The CDO will aggressively develop a pipeline to seek funding from new sources. And, the CDO will support and nurture current partnerships and create opportunities to expand their investment in SOPA. The CDO will develop customized strategies leveraging the Special Olympics brand to help partner companies drive business, grow their brand awareness, build their culture, and make business-to-business connections. The CDO will promote all aspects of a potential relationship including monetary and in-kind support spanning operational, marketing, sponsorship, and employee engagement opportunities.
Critical characteristics for the right candidate include a demonstrated ability to successfully meet organizational goals, consistently and positively represent the organization (internally/externally), and think and act both strategically and tactically. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate clear, concise and coherent writing and verbal skills. We are looking for someone with major gifts fundraising experience, a strong track record of revenue generation and a background demonstrating supervisory, strategic, management and leadership skills.
Considerable statewide travel is necessary on an on-going basis.
Lead and manage all of SOPA’s fundraising efforts, including the current 3-year, $4MM “Inclusion Revolution” Campaign.
In conjunction with the Board of Directors and the CEO, develop and implement a plan for all fundraising activities and set strategic goals to meet the financial needs of the organization throughout Pennsylvania. This plan will chart SOPA’s strategic direction in regards to short term and long term fundraising needs and goals.
Work with senior leadership and other development team members to create annual revenue budgets, expense budgets, staff goals and program goals.
Provide expertise, leadership and direction in all aspects of fundraising to the Development Team and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
Actively steward, engage and cultivate major gifts donors – with an emphasis on individual and corporate giving.
Develops and leads overall growth strategy for corporate and organizational partnerships statewide.
Builds a vibrant partnership "pipeline," targeting entities capable of long-term and significant financial support. Identifies, manages, and solicits high-level prospects to maximize their long-term value and benefit (with emphasis on relationships of $50K or more annually).
Researches the best prospective alliances in each industry sector, develops strategic business cases, prepares proposals and “pitch decks” and participates in and/or leads presentations to potential partners.
Works closely with existing partners to continuously identify and cultivate new, mutually beneficial opportunities for collaboration.
Maintains a personal presence and relationships in the business community and helps SOPA establish a stronger presence to increase awareness and elevate the organization’s stature.
Conducts periodic “partnership summits” to bring together key partners for inspiration, networking and collaboration.
Conducts overall evaluation of all partnerships to ensure sponsor satisfaction and organizational goals are met.
Oversee all special events including 7 state polar plunges, the Beaver Stadium Run, two Torch Runs, the UNcathlon, the Leprechaun Run, “Unified Sports Experiences” and numerous 3rd party events.
Work with 56 local programs (current structure)/9 regions (proposed structure) across the state to help meet and support the financial needs related to local program budgets.
Oversee SOPA’s marketing and communications team.
Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to highlight and promote SOPA’s work throughout Pennsylvania.
Supervise staff of 10+ employees.
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred.
An overall total of 10 or more years of nonprofit fundraising or corporate business development experience is required, with a record of successfully creating large scale partnerships or significant revenue generation through business development enterprises. A minimum five (5) or more years managing and developing teams is required. Prior nonprofit experience strongly desired.
Performance Contributions will be measured by:
Annual revenue generated
Achievement of strategic plan goals related to development and marketing
Cost effectiveness (revenue generated per staff and/or cost ratio)
Number of new partners, size of each partnership (total $s, single vs multi-year)
Growth in existing relationships
Satisfaction and retention of partners
Cultivation statistics (number of calls and meetings with prospects, number of business cases developed, number of proposals submitted)
