Reporting to the VP, Communications and Advancement you will be responsible for the development and implementation of plans and strategies focused on building relationships and raising funds with individuals, corporations and foundations. As an active member of the Communications and Advancement team, you will contribute directly to the planning and implementation of the overall fundraising program of the university.
You will have primary responsibility, in partnership with the VP, Communications and Advancement, to match major gift and planned giving prospects, donors and funders’ interests to university priorities, including areas such as student awards, capital and infrastructure development, endowments, and others as they emerge. Key to your role is building of strong, trusting relationships with prospects and key constituents, including those in the RRU alumni and military heritage community.
As the Manager, you will leverage the experience and involvement of the VP, Communications and Advancement and the President as well as leading a team of two Officers and one Assistant to prospect, cultivate and steward gifts to maintain donor and funder involvement, interest and support. You will be actively involved with key members of the Royal Roads University community including Board of Governors, advisory council members, senior leaders, faculty, students, alumni and professional staff.
You will practice to the standards advocated by nationally designated professional fundraising associations, such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Certified Fundraising Raising Executives (CFRE), Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) and Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
As the incumbent you will be responsible for managing relationships with donor prospects at all levels with a focus on prospects with an ability to secure special gifts at the $25K to $100K plus level. You will also lead and guide the Advancement Officers to manage annual gifts at the $1K to $25K level by developing and implementing strategies for securing financial support from a portfolio of donor prospects including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding these gifts from alumni and friends.
The Advancement function is supported by the Operations Unit within the Communications and Advancement team. As the Manager you will directly liaise with the leader of the Operations Unit for data, prospect research, administrative and record-management support.
University degree in marketing, business or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation considered an asset
Minimum of 5-7 years experience in a staff fundraising role, preferably within an academic fundraising environment
Track record of successful major gift and planned gift solicitation and proposal writing
Current knowledge of major gifts, planned giving vehicles and the tax aspects of these vehicles
Experience with prospect and donor stewardship management
Experience with corporate and foundation giving in Canada and the USA
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Solid relationship building across diverse markets, negotiating, and ‘closing’ skills

Strategic thinker with ability to influence and inspire others Ability to motivate and coach senior staff and executive in fundraising and accompany, prepare and assist senior staff or executive on fundraising calls

Demonstrate a positive attitude and have the ability to promote and maintain a positive and collaborative team environment in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as well as to work independently
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook) and Raisers Edge
Knowledge of the University, its heritage aspects, its programs, and the RRU learning experience considered an asset
