Yale is poised to embark on an ambitious capital campaign to raise support for the Sciences, which will encompass a transformation of Yale’s Science Hill, a centralized campus promoting research and teaching. Yale University is seeking a talented and collaborative fundraising professional to lead development efforts for the Sciences. This position will work closely with other senior development officers and scientific leadership to advance funding efforts for all of Yale’s science programs.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director of Development for Science Strategy is responsible for developing and implementing fundraising strategies to create awareness, interest, and engagement for a range of prospects in support of university priorities and academic initiatives in STEM fields at Yale.
The Director of Development for Science Strategy will lead and coordinate efforts in fundraising planning and generating support for STEM. She/he will identify areas of funding opportunity and play a leading role in the planning and implementation of an effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship program. The Director will be responsible for working with relevant STEM leadership, faculty and staff to enhance communication and awareness of development goals. As appropriate, she/he will engage high-wealth individuals, corporations and foundations and work with faculty to augment development efforts with the donor community. The Director also serves as the primary STEM content resource to fundraising units.
Specific Responsibilities of the Director of Development for Science Strategy:
Act as primary strategist to increase capacity to raise money in the Sciences at Yale.
Work across academic, development and institutional disciplines to identify university science priorities and funding opportunities and facilitate building of faculty and development teams to staff these cases.
Create and advance fundraising strategies, solicitations and stewardship plans for a university-wide portfolio of principal and major gift prospects.
Strategize on principal and major gift-focused cultivation, stewardship events, dinners, and visits.
Cultivate, solicit and steward individuals, corporations and foundations with connections to STEM fields.
Within this Director’s portfolio, institute policies to grow the portfolio of Yale University prospects and donors for the Sciences, especially for non-traditional donors such as friends.
Maintain advanced knowledge and understanding of development approaches and best practices in fundraising to effectively engage with donors.
Effectively represent Yale University and its scientific activities through verbal and written communication.
Manage a limited portfolio of principal and major gift prospects.
Minimum 8 years related experience in development, preferably in higher education or non-profit setting.
Comfort in working in a fast-paced matrixed organization with multiple stakeholders.
Comfort in translating and relaying scientific content to a variety of key audiences.
Entrepreneurial and independent while at the same time, deeply collaborative.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands and changing pace of priorities; comfortable dealing with all levels of University staff.
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or other similar donor databases.
CRITICAL COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESS:
Ability to craft short and long term cultivation strategies tailored to donors at the 8 figure level and above; identify new and existing donors and activate comprehensive development strategies to achieve goals.
Credible and successful with faculty, demonstrating an understanding of content as well as their needs and concerns while leveraging them as spokespeople for institutional programs; match faculty to donors achieving productive long term relationships.
Track record of working across an institution in a collaborative manner, maximizing potential gifts from donors.
Ability to think at a high level about institutional priorities and integrate donor needs into these priorities; ability to build internal institutional collaborations across disciplines.
A collaborative work style is essential to the Director of Development for Science Strategy at Yale University. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility in adapting to shifting institutional priorities and must possess the maturity, poise, and sophistication to understand and manage complex relationships with faculty, development colleagues and high net worth individuals. The candidate should thrive in a high performing environment. The successful candidate will be comfortable in this fast-paced setting and have the intellectual curiosity and personal motivation to achieve the goals of the Sciences at Yale University. She/he will have a demonstrated ability to bring team spirit, enthusiasm and integrity to the role to motivate and achieve results.
