Position Objective and Summary:
In coordination with the overall fundraising activities of UCAN’s Development department, the Associate Vice President of Development is responsible for executing and supervising elements of the department’s strategic plan. This position supports the CEO and Vice President of Development & Government Affairs in fundraising efforts and is a key solicitor responsible for expanding and diversifying the organization's funding base. The position has oversight of the department’s portfolio and moves management systems, and maintains an appropriate portfolio of major gift prospects. This position will also be responsible for stewardship, donor communications and event management and supervise the Director of Development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Donor Relations & Major Gifts:
Identifies, engages, cultivates and stewards assigned prospects capable of making major gifts to UCAN. Assists the Vice President of Development & Government Affairs in developing, supervising, evaluating short-term (less than 1 year) and long-term (1-5 years) strategic plans for all fundraising activities that include measurable objectives and thoughtful budgeting. Develop, implements and evaluates the operation of a department-wide program to attract major outright and planned/deferred gifts from individuals and corporations. Oversees the department’s moves management process to increase individual donor contributions and move constituents from prospects to active donors. Crafts solicitation programs and proposes prospect acquisition activities tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers. Acts as staffs and coaches UCAN’s Board Resource Development Committee. During campaign periods, works with the VP of Development and campaign counsel on campaign strategy, employee campaign leadership, gift solicitation, and other campaign activities. Maintains responsibility for department knowledge management, including systems, tools, reporting, data tracking, reconciliation, and analysis. Expands and enhances UCAN donor recognition strategies. Promptly responds to donor inquiries.
Ten (10) years of experience in related work required, with documented and verifiable history in successfully closing seven-figure major gifts through in-person solicitation Seven (7) years of supervisory and administrative experience required. Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree and/or CFRE level preferred
Special Knowledge and Qualifications: Awareness of networks of philanthropy in the Chicago area, in the human services sector and beyond. Demonstrated commitment to and integration with the broader community of Chicago nonprofit development professionals. Strong experience with fundraising software, wealth screening practices, and fundraising knowledge management best practices. Best-in-class analytical, presentation, oral and written communication skills, with the flexibility and sensitivity needed to engage with and work with diverse populations, personalities, and situations. Excellent organizational and multi-tasking capabilities, with demonstrated ability to implement new systems and workflows. Flexible approach to workload and scheduling with ability to work outside of standard business hours and travel as needed. Energy, enthusiasm, and poise. Knowledge of and experience with planned giving and deferred gift vehicles. Car and valid Illinois driver’s license and insurance required.
