VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT
Position Summary: The Vice President of Development reports directly to the President & CEO and is a strategic thinker and planner who concurrently identifies, cultivates and solicits high net worth prospects along with stewarding prospects and further supporting Island Harvest’s marketing and branding efforts. The Vice President will manage the fundraising and development department by creating a major gifts program, supporting the department in their implementation of special events, research of potential donors, and in writing proposals. S/he will work with the President & CEO in setting Department and Organizational goals as well as work with the President & CEO and our outside consulting firm to help assist and support the Capital Campaign.
Support the development department in their implementation of fundraising and special event programs.
Design and implement a structured major gifts program as a component of Island Harvest’s overall fundraising program.
Research and identify new donors while maintaining and further developing existing relationships with contributors. Represent Island Harvest in meeting with potential funding sources.
Present well-planned, thorough, and structured presentations. Ensure that Island Harvest’s mission statement, goals, and values are consistently relayed through marketing collateral.
Engage donors and contributors of all levels. Seek additional private and public sector funding.
Advise and assist in the development of an organization-wide fundraising strategy.
Collaborate with development staff members to identify avenues of financial support for events and programming.
Actively maintain contact with Island Harvest program personnel regarding new programs and events for funding.
Maintain close working relationships with the fundraising committee of the Board of Directors and the active, ongoing and smooth functioning of the Fundraising committee as it seeks to increase private and public sector funding for Island Harvest.
Understand the external environment as it relates to Island Harvest and the demand for food and other services on Long Island.
Aid in establishing goals & objectives for the department, and for the organization as a whole.
Engage corporate and business leaders and their organizations towards supporting Island Harvest.
Aid in establishing, implementing, and oversee the budget for the Development Department.
Manage development staff; guide & advise them.
Meet regularly with the President & CEO and senior staff for reports, guidance, & support.
Create sponsorship and give opportunities for businesses, corporations, and individuals.
Perform other activities/projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
Bachelor’s degree in Business or Marketing or a related field of study, or equivalent work experience.
Five years of successful and progressive fundraising experience in areas such as grantsmanship, special events, annual giving, and direct mail. Prior nonprofit experience required.
Must be proficient at closing the deal.
Must be able to ask for fund and other key support.
Must be extremely comfortable and effective in settings with senior corporate and foundation executives.
Strong sales and negotiation skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word) and the Internet. Knowledge of Donor Perfect and/or Primarius is a plus.

Be willing to work early mornings, nights and/or weekends, as needed.
Be willing to travel throughout the region, as necessary.
