Founded in 1787, the University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, and was cited in 2014 as the only public university in Pennsylvania considered a “Best Value College” based on academic quality, cos...t and financial aid. The university was ranked as the top public university in the country in the publication Saviors of Our Cities: A Survey of Best College and University Civic Partnerships, which measured schools’ economic and developmental impacts on neighboring regions. The nearly $755 million Pitt spends on research each year directly and indirectly supports the local economy, putting Pitt at the heart of what the U.S. Department of Labor calls an education and health services “super sector,” and is responsible for more than one in every five jobs in the greater Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh campus is an urban campus located in the city's Oakland neighborhood. Pitt also has five regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville. The University is composed of 17 undergraduate and graduate colleges serving more than 28,000 students each year.
